Even this year Print Club Turin hosted the laboratory of Materials Technology for Graphics with Matthijs Ronner and Robbert Liekens from Luisella Cresto: from January 31st to February 2nd, 2023 first and second year students of the degree course in Graphic Design and Digital Media they experienced printing first hand Risograph, technique economical and with very low environmental impact patented in Japan in the 1980s by Kagaku Rice Corporation.
In 2022 we had chosen the theme of food as an expression of our cultural identity, giving life to the fanzine Ucca l'ammaThe theme chosen for this year's editorial project instead investigates the concepts of overdrive e confine, understood as an artificial line, as a material impediment or as an emotional obstacle.
We were inspired by the typographic whites, the empty areas present in a publishing product (spacing, leading, and margins) that serve to separate words and frame the composition for printing. Even in the total absence of any marks or elements, typographical white spaces have the same body strength as printed characters: the limit has thus become the starting point for its own overcoming and she was born Cu nesci arrinesci.
Cu nesci arrinesci it is a proverb in Sicilian dialect which, translated, literally means "whoever goes out succeeds”. It can be used to imply that, sometimes, to be successful it is necessary to move away from one's homeland, but in our reflection we wanted to reverse this perspective and give it a positive meaning, interpreting the verb you will disappear as an invitation to go beyond your limits to achieve one's goals or as an exhortation to to come out of one's own comfort zone.
The Risograph printer is an evolution of the cyclostyle: it is a stencil duplicator that uses inks and matrices of natural origin, with a color rendering similar to screen printing combined with the speed of photocopiersDuring the various color passages, out-of-register effects and small printing differences may occur, making each copy a unique piece.
After a series of layout prototypes, color studies and print tests on Fedrigoni Arena Smooth natural paper 100 g/m2, the volume has finally taken shape: an investigation into affections, our history and the boundaries we impose on ourselves and that we can overcome.
"When you walk through the Print Club threshold, no one knows what the final product will look like. Each participant faced a design challenge that they approached with a proactive and mature approach, putting themselves to the test with the same determination evoked by the title of our publication, and successfully completing the final project."
