Since 2017 ABADIR has been a member of Erasmus+ Programme, the European Commission initiative promoting the student mobility and of school and university staff through study and training opportunities in Europe.

Following the numerous experiences gained over recent years in the fields of’Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies (which allows you to study for a semester or an entire academic year at one of ABADIR's partner universities), of’Erasmus Student Mobility for Traineeship (which offers the possibility of undertaking a placement in a European country) and of the Staff Mobility for Teaching and for Training (reserved for teaching and staff members), this year we have trialled a new form of mobility: the Short Mobility, a hybrid, intensive and short-term mobility, lasting between 5 and 30 days, which integrates an in-person part and a virtual component.

From 15th to 19th July 2024 we have been to Matosinhos, in the district of Porto in Portugal, thanks to the collaboration with ESAD – School of Art and Design, with a group consisting of 10 students.

The Short Mobility it was organised as part of Consorzio EMN – Erasmus Mobility Network (of which ABADIR is a part alongside the association not-for-profit Education in Progress – lead partner – and to the universities of Catania and Messina) and financed with funds from the 2022 Call.

After a tour of the ESAD campus we stopped at esad—idea, the unit of Research & Development of the university. He deals with Design, Architecture, Graphics and Art and promotes the spread of knowledge developed in these disciplinary fields through a series of publications such as journals, exhibition catalogues, essays and monographs, as well as through residencies for artists and designers.

House of Design instead it is exhibition space at ESAD, the result of a partnership between esad—idea and the Municipality of Matosinhos. Iconic location of design culture, organises regularly exhibitions and events – with a particular focus on Portuguese design – and hosted the first Porto Design Biennale (c’eravamo anche noi con il progetto MIGRA-N-TI. Practical and symbolic experiments in design).

Grazie alla sinergia con la Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos, ESAD ha dato vita anche a un incubatore sviluppato all’interno del mercato coperto cittadino, un centro di innovazione e creatività dove studenti e studentesse possono dare maggiore concretezza ai propri progetti e fare impresa.

Il Programma Erasmus+ mira non solo ad arricchire il curriculum didattico, a sviluppare competenze professionali e a rafforzare la cooperazione tra gli istituti di istruzione superiore, ma anche a migliorare la conoscenza delle culture e delle lingue dei paesi UE e a promuovere il senso di cittadinanza europea. Per questo è stato importante anche entrare a contatto con il territorio e con le realtà locali.

Siamo stati ospiti del designer e art director Eduardo Aires, autore – tra i vari progetti – dell’identità visiva della città di Porto. Il suo studio si occupa di progetti multidisciplinari, dalla brand identity alla comunicazione visiva passando anche per l’arte contemporanea, con un forte legame col territorio.

Abbiamo visitato anche la Casa da Música progettata da Rem Koolhaas, una delle più importanti sale da concerto costruite nell’epoca moderna, sede di tre diverse orchestre e di numerosi eventi culturali. Un edificio dalle architetture poliedriche e dagli interni strabilianti, in grado di ospitare performance di ogni genere musicale: dal jazz al rock all’opera lirica, dall’elettronica al fado, dalle grandi produzioni internazionali ai piccoli progetti sperimentali.

La nostra Short Mobility si è conclusa il 23 luglio con un incontro online (virtual component).
