MIGRA-N-TI. Practical and Symbolic Experiments in Design

MIGRA-N-TI. Practical and Symbolic Experiments in Design

The issue of migration is one of the most controversial in our current history. Sicily, a border region, experiences the daily drama of the emergence of endless throngs of migrants arriving (when they can) on its coasts, the first port of call in the "new" world.

In 2017 the entire school, teachers and students, has chosen to question what the phenomenon of migration isThe premise was a wide-ranging data collection effort on what design has achieved on the topic. The two major extremes of the reaction to the phenomenon are thus analyzed: on the one hand, a intellectual speculation aimed at a Western audience, where design proposes symbolic works as actions of denunciation; on the other hand the creation of practical objects dedicated to refugees, aseptic and impersonal technical tools, devoid of any consideration of the psycho-emotional factor.

School acts as a great attractor of experiences and reflections, where the process is the message and data collection is the first real objective for forming one's own ideas. Many questions arise: is it possible to reconcile the practical and the symbolic? What is the gap between the data collected and the information disseminated? How do Sicilians experience this phenomenon?

On this last aspect—the reaction of local populations—an epochal transition is evident: Sicilians, once migrants to the Americas, are now themselves becoming the first to welcome new migrants. Connecting the position of migrants and migrantes is an essential aspect of the issue in this area.

Our projects

Students and teachers conducted research in the field of product and visual communication, interior and exhibition design.
Working in synergy with several local reception centers, through workshops and specific meetings involving migrants, families of objects and other outputs were created that mediate between Sicilian and African cultures.

TRAVELMATE

STUDENT: SERGIO COSTA SUPERVISOR: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
Once in Italy, many migrants decide to leave the reception centers for short periods or undertake often very risky journeys to cross the national border and reach other countries. The project involves creating a multipurpose backpack capable of holding the reception kit given to migrants, using suitable, durable materials and providing different configurations for rest and travel.

IMPRINTING. Dressing in meaning

STUDENT: CARLA GARIPOLI SUPERVISOR: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
The aim of this thesis is to promote a project of social integration between Sicilian and African migrant cultures, through the symbolic power of textiles. The project involves the creation of a textile printing kit in which African and Sicilian symbols are integrated to create a space where typical and common aspects of the two cultures meet.
The project has been selected to participate in RECIPROCITY DESIGN LIÈGE 2018.

STRUMMULE. Architecture in Motion

STUDENT: ROBERTA PALAZZOLO SUPERVISOR: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
Play is an activity found in all cultures and unites people. This work proposes the creation of a family of "strummule" (drums) that combine the typical forms of residential and monumental architecture of African and Sicilian cultures.

CR(E)ATE. Nomadic workshops made from recycled wood

STUDENT: ALESSANDRA SAPORITA SPEAKER: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
The project stems from a reflection on the theme of recycling, linked to that of repair, and culminates in the self-construction, through variations on joints and worktops, of a nomadic workshop made from recycled materials by the migrants themselves. The primary material used is poplar and fir wood from fruit crates, chosen for their rigorous connection to the Sicilian territory.
The project has been selected to participate in RECIPROCITY DESIGN LIÈGE 2018 and it's winner of the International Award The New (Learning) Objects.

VIBRATIONS. A family of ethnic percussion instruments for a new Sicilian-African culture.

STUDENT: EMANUELE TORRISI SUPERVISOR: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
Generated within specific social and community contexts, musical experience plays an important role in the formation and affirmation of individual and collective identities. Its function, beyond identity-building, is tied to community myths and rituals, to the point of assuming specific therapeutic roles that can still be identified today, particularly in ethnic music.
The project has been selected to participate in RECIPROCITY DESIGN LIÈGE 2018.

PANGEA. Olfactory Landscape

STUDENT: FABRIZIO ZITO SUPERVISOR: FRANCESCA LANZAVECCHIA
Starting from the element of earth, the project's aim is to restore life by generating life; a family of vases gives everyone the opportunity to create their own indoor garden. Smell plays an important role as a key to memories. The choice to recreate an olfactory landscape was associated with the aromatic herbs used both in Africa and Sicily to flavor traditional dishes.

COMEHOME. Field device for worship

STUDENT: RAFFAELE CARUSO SUPERVISOR: VINCENZO CASTELLANA
This research and design project addresses the relationship between migrants and their faith, through an analysis focused on the symbols and rites of the three monotheistic religions. For each religion, we sought to understand the order of ritual paths and deduce the physical elements present in places of worship. Finally, we sought to compare the research findings to highlight any symbolic and ritual differences and similarities.

TREE FOR ALL. Field device for worship.

STUDENT: MARIAGRAZIA OCCHIPINTI SPEAKER: VINCENZO CASTELLANA
The project aims to design a field structure for the worship of the three monotheistic religions, in which the ritual spaces are juxtaposed and integrated into a single structure. Key aspects of the project therefore include spatial aggregation, structural elements, and the possibilities offered by prefabrication, in terms of costs and construction time.

SIMPLE JOBS

STUDENT: ROSARIO COSENTINO SUPERVISOR: ALDO PRESTA
If Western society destines migrants to be subjugated and clandestine, we might as well study how best to do so, attempting to utilize the techniques capitalism has developed to formalize the role of workers in developed societies. "Simple Jobs" is the app (with a tutorial) for training the perfect deracinè: skills, competencies, methods, and useful information for entering the world of (under)work.

CO-Li-BRi. Between non-profit organizations and design

STUDENT: GIULIA GAROZZO SUPERVISOR: ALDO PRESTA
The thesis draws on the experience of co-li-bri.eu, a collaborative platform created to connect designers, associations, institutions, businesses, and migrants, and aims to analyze the relationships between several nonprofit organizations working on migrant issues and their online and social media presence. The project section addresses the development of the platform itself, including new sections and a communications campaign.

GUIDE TO BUREAUCRACY-A

STUDENTS: PLACIDO GUGLIELMO AND FRANCESCO SCIVOLI SPEAKER: ALDO PRESTA
The aim of this thesis is to develop a guide for migrants, to help them more easily navigate the intricacies of Italian bureaucracy, its offices, and its often contradictory regulations. The project draws on a strand of projects and experiments aimed at democratizing design and expanding its ethical and social sphere.

MIXTURES

STUDENT: ANDREA SCADUTO SUPERVISOR: ALDO PRESTA
Food is a language. The project identifies some basic elements, common among the different cultures of origin of migrants and the host cultures in Sicily and Calabria, to formalize them in catalogs, with ingredients and instructions for food preparation. The result is new and experimental comparative recipe books.
