Sea Flakes

Sea Flakes

Like every year, in the month of December, the Sicilcima showroom Catania hosts an installation curated by ABADIR: Sea Flakes is a project of upcycling created by the students of the course Exhibition design driven by Makoto Fukuda, to raise awareness on the issue of pollution from plastic bags.

The name is the union of is (sea) and flakes (scales): a series of suspended tiles, made opalescent by contact with light, created recovering over 450 commonly used PET bottles.

Plastic is a versatile material that can be recycled, reused or transformed to reduce its environmental impact: shaped using the technique of thermoforming, the bottles acquire a suggestive corrugated surface that recalls the ripples of sea waves, While the fragmented composition of the wall evokes the fragility of marine ecosystems.

The use of waste materials underlines thesustainable approach of the installation and intends to raise awareness on the importance of adopting circular economy practices to limit waste and enhance our resources, focusing on safeguarding the Mediterranean Sea.

We chose plastic, a material ubiquitous in our lives, and decided to give it a second life by completely transforming the PET bottles and integrating them into the display. This not only gives them a new identity, stimulating the creative process, but also helps raise awareness about waste reduction and recycling.

The installation can be visited starting from 7 December 2023 in Viale Africa 42 in Catania.

At the same time, other Sicilcima stores will also host the installations designed in recent years: White Allegory in Palermo (via Leonardo da Vinci 147) and Pink Clouds in Grammichele (via Falcone e Borsellino 20).
