Why is a painting considered art and embroidery at best the expression of excellent craftsmanship?
Why has the world been divided into “major” and “minor” arts and why do the latter, coincidentally, usually fall among traditionally female practices?
Stitching universes. Why minor and feminine arts do not exist it is the new essay by Domitilla Dardi (Einaudi, 2026), a reinterpretation of expressive languages such as ceramics, sewing, knitting, embroidery, cooking, which overcomes gender and disciplinary prejudices and investigates the profound influence that—in other periods and geographies, such as the Middle Ages and the East—these design cultures have exerted on ideas, inventions, and basic tools even for the contemporary Western world.
The author is presenting the book in Catania on Friday 24 July at 19:00 at Abadir DELIDA (124 Via Vittorio Emanuele) in conversation with Vincenzo Castellana (architect, lecturer, Director of the Master's in Strategic Design and Creative Direction) and Maria Carmela Sciacca (bookseller and co-founder of the Prampolini Bookbinding Workshop). Introduce Lucia Giuliano, director of Abadir.
Free admission.
The story told in Cucire universi is not only a counter-history of design, which restores importance to protagonists and works discriminated against by historiographical and cultural prejudice, but also an exploration of past events and present potentials.
The event is organised by Abadir, in collaboration with the Prampolini Bookshop and Bookbinder, as part of the 1st level Master's degree in Strategic Design and Creative Direction – From Ford to face powder.
