Let the City Speak (“let the city speak”) is a project curated by Studio Mut, made in partnership with Catania Island in the context of Summer school 2023 of the Masters in Visual Communication and Art Direction: 30 young designers from all over Italy have tried to tell Catania, give it voice and dialogue with it through a series of poster.
Starting from a series of meetings with local associations, From 'exploration of the urban fabric and from contact with people who inhabit and experience it every day, the master's students, together with a small group of recent graduates and designers under 35, have collected images, stories and points of view from which to draw inspiration for the posters, which were developed and produced during an intensive and immersive workshop, 28 from July to August 2 2023, in the spaces of Catania Island – workshop partners – under the guidance of graphic designer Thomas Kronbichler e Martin Kerschbaumer, founders of Studio Mut in Bolzano.
The power of a poster extends far beyond its aesthetic appeal. Paired with a strong message, it becomes a starting point for a conversation, a voice that guides discussion, challenges our perceptions, sparks debate, and pushes us to reflect on the world around us.
The result is a kaleidoscope of ideas, themes and subjects: there are those who have interpreted the graphically dialect and the typical "vanniate" of the two main city markets, the Fera O' Luni and the fish market; who explored the culinary tradition as an identity trait, food as a ritual and as the driving force behind numerous social and family conventions; whoever wanted to focus on popular neighborhoods and celebrate the people who live there and are their face, like Francesco Grasso, known to all as “Franchina”, a historic resident of San Berillo.
The original artifacts, made on paper Fedrigoni, were on display from Isola for the whole month of August 2023. Starting from Monday 11 September, thanks to the support of Sandra Virlinzi, a selection will be posted on the streets of Catania in a sort of widespread and collective exhibitionThe posters also stop by Neighborhood Plots.
