How can artificial intelligence support designers in the creative process and the design phases?
In the workshop Too Many Cooks with Claudia Colombo and Melani De Luca, course tutors Methods and Tools for Representation, we had worked on a series of archival images of the Lanificio Leo, processing them through the machine learning to generate new ones, with the aim of capturing the essence of the products and distilling the company's identity.
With Sander Sturing and Merijn van Velsen from Studio Dumbar/DEPT® we instead focused on AI code generation and creative control.
Working in groups, we used ChatGPT e Processing to generate codes that would bring a series of graphic patterns to life. Each team then experimented with their own code, modifying and refining it to achieve interesting and unpredictable variations. Finally, we crossed and remixed the various codes together to create a final “super code” that synthesised all the projects.
Using the patterns – transformed into posters and reproduced on the screens of our digital devices – we then set up an immersive installation at the Accademia.
Participants: Lucia Buscemi, Samuele Chiusa, Lorenzo Dugo, Giulia Faro, Samuele Salvatore Federico, Marie Christelle Martinez, Gabriele Amedeo Nicosia, Mario Paolino, Gaia Patti, Aurora Piazza, Alessia Prestigiacomo, Clarissa Raimondo.
